Hi, I’m Shawn McPike and I have Parkinson’s Disease. I say that first, not because it defines me, but rather it has helped shape me into who I am today. But first a little backstory. I first experienced my first side effects over eight years ago and the age of 32. I thought it to be carpal-tunnel syndrome as I type a lot of have horrible habits I’m sure.

After getting my diagnosis and being on the meds for over 5 years, things began to affect me greater than they had in the past. In May of 2010, I had a DBS device (essentially a pacemaker for your brain) implanted in the left side of my brain and a battery pack in my chest. In December, I had the implant done remaining side as well.

I also Manage Social Media and Community Strategy for AT&T. I have a dedicated team focused on Social Customer Care (@ATTCustomerCare on Twitter, live on the facebook/ATT wall and with help videos on YouTube) and Community (owning and managing our 2.5 million registered members of AT&T’s Support Forums at att.com/forums).

All views, perspectives, etc. are my own and not my employer’s nor anyone elses.

    Hey Shawn!
I’ve just come across your blog and it’s pretty cool! Sounds like you’re doing amazing.  I’m interested that you’ve taken up using the Nike+ to help you exercise.  I’m a physio student in the UK about to do a piece of research to show how Nike+ could be used to help those with Parkinson’s as it’s not been covered in literature before and I’m sure it can help.  Have you found it useful? would you recommend it to others with PD? are there any particular features that you like about the Nike+?
    Cheers,
    Helen
