A burgeoning Irish-American author, Shawn delivers powerfully paced and suspenseful tales in the Genre, Science Fiction and Horror markets. With his inspiration his limitation sto by The Twilight Zone, The Shining, and Edgar Allan Poe, McPike's tales often revolve around the supernatural or unexplained phenomena in addition to being heavily character and storyline driven.

Shawn took quite a wandering path to becoming an author. Graduating from college in 1992, he stayed true to his major and became an accountant, eventually working at a CPA firm in Quincy, Illinois. After three years of auditing and preparing taxes, the numbers game became so monotonous that he decided to self-learn a new career in technology and the Internet in 1995. He subsequently worked for IBM for several years, having finally ended up working at AT&T as a Senior Technical Director over AT&T's Online Support at their ATT.com site. He still remains there today.

He often jokes that he had started out as a nerd and then at some point switched over to become a geek. Somewhere along the way another transformation began to occur as well. That from being a left-brain programmer into one of being a right-brain author and novelist. He increasingly shunned his Sony Vaio and instead began to use an MacBook Pro.

He now loves the Mac, and no longer thinks creative people are flakey. They, well we, are crazy though usually. After all, what completely sane person could think up "Carrie", or "The Shining" (sorry to pick on you Mr. King so I'll pick on myself here too) or "Last Fragment" or "True Calling"? And so He does what so many have done before him - arise early each day and write. His current works consist of:

  • a 125,000-word science fiction novel which he's slowly editing.
  • A Literary Fiction novel in the early stages (5,000 words).
  • The next in his series of Horror shorts: "Next Exit" (Put together a rough outline - target of 10,000 words.)

Finally, Shawn would like to give a shout-out to some other folks and mediums he enjoys as being 'out there' and a little bit crazy too:

  • Steven King novels like "The Tommyknockers," especially.
  • The X-Files - all but the last season and the last movie especially.
  • Fringe (TV) - Love this show. . . favorite thing on TV at present.
